70's smack / 00's bs
ohbejuan asks, what did i eat? exempting the obvious, yesterday i attempted to eat very plain soba noodles and miso soup. alas to little avail, as i ended up expelling even before they hit the table, and spent most of sunday all cracked out and uneasy.
what better way to soothe the savaged breast than to spend some time at the cinema? thus we went to the egyptian theatre last night, to take in american cinematheque’s
new hollywood series, focusing on groundbreaking films from the 60’s and 70’s. hmc and i term this “70’s realism”, but it’s basically the realistic gritty type films of the era such as
chinatown,
the french connection, and notably cassavettes’
killing of a chinese bookie. this particular double bill featured john huston’s
fat city, a gritty boxing flick starring stacy keach, jeff bridges, and even nicholas colasanto (coach!). i’d like to say i loved it, but honestly i slept through most of it. (see “cracked out state” above)
particularly unfortunately, the second half was
panic in needle park, featuring a young al pacino and the fabulous kitty winn in a hard hard look at the life of junkies and dealers in new york. not to belabor a point, but while cracked out, watching the 70’s version of
requiem for a dream isn’t the most comforting thing in the world.
today, before driving back home, we stopped in to amoeba hollywood, where it turns out belle and sebastian were doing a free show. my favorite part was where they started off asking, “doesn’t anyone have a job?”
word.
