i finally got my imac back up and running. the main firewire drive took a dump sometime in january, after coughing and sputtering off and on for a couple of months. thankfully, i had been backing up to a mirror drive using superduper!, so i had a relatively recent backup. unfortunately, for some reason it wouldn’t let me boot of the sucker.
long story short, i had a new 250gb hard drive in a usb enclosure, which was relatively useless, since the old imac dv only supported usb1, not usb2. meaning something like 1.5 Mbps as opposed to 480 Mbps . so i bought a firewire enclosure for it (400 Mbps , but why didn’t anyone tell me that i was supposed to look for an oxford chipset?), and restored the mirror to the new drive. booted like a charm.
so i’m back up and running, albeit at a state from sometime in november. meaning i’ve got a lot of cd’s to rerip into itunes. but that’s certainly manageable— it’s better than having to rerip 80+ gigs from scratch. plus now i can play all of my music again, instead of just listening to kcrw all the time. (although that’s not bad either.)
