star wars: a new disillusionment
i asked my parents for the star wars dvd boxed set for xmas, and the other day i got around to watching them. unfortunately, watching star wars for the first time in over five years, i was really disappointed. granted, i wasn’t exactly sober when i watched it, but still, i don’t think i ever noticed these things before:
- this just isn’t that great of a movie.
- luke and leia’s costumes are basically a big white sheet, maybe because that’s kept the wardrobe budget down.
- harrison ford has really improved as an actor, but apparently much later than this.
- the new inserted scenes really look horrible. and they not only look horrible, but they make the old stuff look old without looking well done themselves.
- what is alec guinness doing in this movie? sometimes he looks like he’s thinking the same thing, especially in thie final light saber scene, where he’s fighting this big crazy guy in a black hockey mask or something.
- carrie fisher has a lot of makeup on all the time. although maybe it’s a tribute to that crazy naboo makeup that natalie portman had to wear in episode 1.
- in the first scene with darth vader on the captured ship, it looks like the imperial guy talking to him is just saying a line, waiting, and then saying his next line. maybe they just dubbed james earl jones’ lines in later, and didn’t have someone cueing them? seems odd, but it just looks funny that way.
- maybe my fond memories of this movie being good and a lot of fun really was just nostalgia, because i couldn’t stay awake or interested.
- maybe george lucas just isn’t a good director and that’s that.
i know none of this is really groundbreaking, but i’ve had it in my head that the original trilogy was, if nothing else, a lot of fun, and somehow it was just kind of silly and boring this time. i guess it was sad for me to suddenly see it that way.
