damn bovine unions

they just released this report that says, once again, us suckers in the bay area are being overcharged for shit. this time, it’s milk, which is getting close to $5 a gallon, over $1 more than elsewhere in the country.

and the crazy thing (or maybe not) is that it’s the big chains that are really gouging us:

Consumers Union found that milk can be purchased for as much as $2.20 less per gallon at neighborhood grocery stores and smaller chains. Odabashian said, “It makes no sense that the big supermarkets charge customers so much more for milk than many mom-and-pop stores. The smaller stores pay higher costs per gallon for moving a smaller volume of milk, and many of the big supermarket chain retailers are also milk producers, so they should be able to charge less because they cut out the middlemen.”

She acknowledged, however, that small stores set milk prices relatively low so customers will be drawn in and buy that and other goods. Small grocery market workers said that’s clearly the practice.

on one hand, i’m outraged, but on the other hand, i don’t really like milk at all. hell, i might even be mildly lactose intolerant. it sounds like more excuses to drink orange juice to me. but then again, speaking as someone who keeps breaking bones, maybe i should be drinking more of this stuff.

i’m waiting for the back alley transaction: “pssst! buddy! you want some milk? straight from the farm. fell off the dairy truck!”

but, ohmigod!, have you seen the price of orange juice lately?! it’s like $7.49 for a some pulp tropicana thingy.

why is beer the only cheap beverage around?

for $8 you can get a gallon of odwalla oj at slaveway. or even better, it only costs $5 at costco, which is almost worth a costco membership by itself.
